Wreaths Across America
Port Hudson National Cemetery

Our chapter participated in Wreaths Across America with the Daughters of the American Revolution on December 16, 2017

"At 1,422 participating locations nationwide, grateful Americans in every state placed more than 1,565,000 remembrance wreaths.  At Arlington National Cemetery specifically, 244,700 wreaths (one for each marker there) were placed by more than 75,000 volunteers, the largest crowd to ever participate there.  Nearly 500 truckloads of wreaths were transported across the country through a network of hundreds of volunteer drivers, donated trucking and diesel and countless hours of dedicated volunteers committed to the mission to
Remember, Honor and Teach."

September 28, 2014 - Gold Star Mothers' Day Tea

Each year, since 1936, on the last Sunday of September our United States President calls on all Americans to display our nation's flag and hold appropriate meetings to publicly express their love, sorrow, and reverence towards Gold Star Mothers and their families.
In this Proclamation, our President announces to all Americans this day is a day of remembrance and
as a grateful Nation we honor our ...
Fallen Heroes and their families.
As fellow Americans we lend our strength to these families who have given so much for our country.
Their burdens are ones that no one should have to bear alone,
and it is up to all of us to give them our support, our gratitude, and our prayers.
Today, we remember all of you, our Gold Star Mothers.
We honor your courage and your perseverance and the memory of your children

Patriot Dogs
A New Leash on Life
The People’s Advocate, a nonprofit organization based in Southwest Louisiana, advocate against family violence and campaigns against cruelty. As part of that campaign, People’s Advocate Attorneys, Counselors, Social Workers, and staff represent children caught in the juvenile justice and family court systems. It became clear that many times a child will take actions with bad results as a symptom or consequence of what they have been subjected to, or have learned, at home. It became clear that kids needed real support and rehabilitation to help them learn new behaviors and new ways of thinking early in their lives if there was a chance for them to grow into productive adults who contribute to their community.

New Leash on Life pairs Calcasieu Parish Animal Services abandoned and homeless dogs with kids at risk for becoming repeat offenders. The program at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) has the dogs living with the kids 24/7 at the facility. The kids volunteer and then must be selected for the program by the JDC staff. Once in the program, the care and training of their dog is in their hands. The dogs learn trust, that life might actually hold joy again, that people are basically good, and basic obedience skills. Once the kids train their dogs to pass a basic obedience test, the dogs are then put up for adoption, becoming much more adoptable because they are now obedience trained, socialized, good with kids and other dogs,
and happy to be with people.

PTSD: The Signature Wound

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been called the “signature wound” of those who serve or are currently serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The medical definition seems simple: “an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened.”

Combat PTSD is a normal reaction to abnormal and extreme life events. One in five OEF/OIF Veterans will suffer from PTSD or Depression, often with a peak in problems occurring two to three months after deployment. Some veterans may have problems much later.
The list of common problems is long with the duration of symptoms lasting more than one month. Common issues include drinking or drug problems; feelings of hopelessness, shame, or despair; employment problems; relationship problems that include divorce and violence; and physical symptoms.
First, it is critical that a person showing signs of PTSD talk to someone. They may reach out a chaplain, other veterans or their doctor. It is also important to get a PTSD evaluation from a trained mental health professional.
Treatment ranges from Individual and Group Therapy, medications, Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
The latest therapy is Pet Therapy with specially trained service dogs. This is where the Patriot Dog Therapy program comes in. The act of connecting with a living, nonjudgmental creature who gives unconditional love has shown great promise.

Janet Scaruffi encouraged parents to fill out free chances for the children to win one of the 2 beautiful dolls donated by Nora & Bill friends of Soldiers' Angels from Florida.  The day was a huge success with fun had by all  and then with love shipped to our Heroes in Afghanistan.
